The strategy is nothing new for the UK chain: the supermarket currently wholesales its own label products to countries around the world, including India. Now that will expand to Spain, as Tesco finds ways to compensate for retreats in China, South Korea, Japan and the US.
In return, Tesco will bring a taste of Spain to British shoppers, with a trial of El Corte Ingles products, including sherry vinegar, sliced meats and extra virgin olive oil, arriving on its shelves. Indeed, Tesco already began a trial of 48 Spanish product lines in five Tesco stores in London last year, but will roll out the products to cities such as Brighton, Cambridge and Edinburgh.
“We’re always looking to offer customers new and exciting products as part of our world food range. We’re currently trialing products from El Corte Ingles in a small number of stores and are looking forward to seeing how customers respond,” a spokesperson told The Guardian.
The supermarket highlights particular success with its organic, gluten-free and baby care products abroad, which are not always easily available in overseas markets.
