The A to Z Of Rural Andalucia
Olive Oil and the Oil Train
 Olives and olive oil
The OLIVE TREE and OIL are the symbol of peace, prosperity and knowledge, and substantial elements of the people living on the shores of the Mediterranean, the birthplace of civilisations that marked long periods of history.

THE NOT SO HUMBLE OLIVE

Olive oil is one of the main ingredients of the Mediterranean diet and the ancient Mediterraneans thought olive oil had magical properties.

It is said that olives have heart and the oil has soul. After 40 days of flood Noah saw an olive branch in the beak of a dove, ever since then the olive tree has been a symbol of peace and rebirth.

The Romans bathed their bodies in olive oil to preserve their beauty. Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and lives on in the art of cooking. It can turn a dish of roasted vegetables into a feast and the golden flavor dripped into creamy alioli is sheer magic

This precious greeny-gold liquid squeezed from olives primarily produced in JAEN such as in the SIERRA SEGURA and MAGINA and in CORDOBA in the areas around BAENA and PRIEGO. The so-called Mediterranean diet, considered by many experts to be the healthiest in the world, originated in ANDALUCIA. RUTE'S largest part of economy is based on olives mainly "Hojiblanca", a variety producing quality extra virgen olive oil, and is available to purchase locally from the factory.

JAEN has vast olive groves with more than 50 million trees and is the main source of wealth in the frontier Province.
 Tren de Aceite
The VIA VERDE (GREEN ROUTE) has resulted in the recovery of the history of the TREN DE ACEITE, the OIL TRAIN. Now used by cyclists, riders and walkers the route is 58 kms long and links the town of Lucena, Cabra, Dona Mencia, Zuheros and Luque. Instigated because the main source of wealth in these towns comes from exporting oil, cereals and wine, and this was hindered by the overlong and defective forms of transport. In 1893 the chief engineer of the new company addressed the governors of CORDOBA and JAEN with information that the entire line from PUENTE GENIL to LINARES was open for business. The railway has preserved bridges, stations, level crossings, guard houses and even a tunnel and the beautiful scenery of the SUBBETICA natural park and the LAGUNA DEL SALOBRAL can be admired from a completely different way.
